Breeder Mentor Program

Becoming a Breeder is a huge responsibility—a lifetime commitment for each litter of dogs. Within the LCA, help is available to new Breeders. New kennels must be registered, but may then select a Breeder Mentor to assist and advise during the many choices that must be made.
The criterion for Breeder Mentors consists of:
1. must have raised three LCA approved litters.
2. must be a LCA Member with a kennel in good standing.
3. must be accessible and willing to work with a new breeder.
4. preferably a BACL Examiner or BACL Apprentice.
The Responsibilities of a Breeder Mentor include but are not limited to
the following :
1. Remind your new LCA breeder that her membership in the LCA needs to be
current, her bitch needs a Category Rating, and her kennel must be registered BEFORE she breeds.
2. See if she has questions after reading her Breeders Manual.
3. Remind her to send a completed Confirmation of Breeding form to the
Litter Registration person, Julie Hatlas-Pepper within seven days of the
breeding.
4. Remind the new LCA breeder to call or email the Litter Registration person within three days of the birth of the litter with both the date of birth and the head count of males and females and also any
abnormalities in the litter.
5. Remind the new LCA breeder to call the Litter Registration person at five weeks of age, with a head count of the surviving males and females
so registration numbers can be assigned.
6. Remind the new LCA breeder to fill out the forms sent to her by the Registrar, return them to him and submit a check for registering the litter to the Treasurer.
7. Share your ideas for contracts, buyer screening, puppy records and information to help the puppy buyers etc.
8. Share tips for success and avoiding failure.
9. Visit the new breeders kennel whenever possible, ideally before the first litter is whelped.
10. Complete the Breeder Mentor checklist and mail a copy to Cyd Erich after litter is in their new homes.
