I guess when we’ve hosted as many Specialties as this group has over the past 4 years; we learn to expect the unexpected. This year was no exception. Our Sunday judge mistakenly recorded the wrong date and thought our show was the following weekend. To make matters worse, when we were able to get hold of her, she was in the middle of a family crisis which prevented her from making the show. Show starts at 9:30 AM, and at 9:30 AM, no judge. Fortunately, our original judge took the time to make some calls and found Elaine Young, a veteran judge whom many of us knew from shows in Canada. This was truly a gift as Elaine turned out to be a very gracious and knowledgeable addition to our show. Elaine was more than willing to chat with each owner about what she saw in each of the dogs she judged. One thing I thought showed her class was prior to judging our champions, Elaine walked down the line and shook hands with each owner. All of us really appreciated that extra effort. Thanks so much Elaine.

We had no such problem on Saturday as Dennis Morgan, an old friend of the LCNW took that posting. We can always count on Dennis for an accurate, spot on assessment of each of our dogs. We had a record entry of 63 Leos for Saturday’s competition.
As the author of this piece, I’ve got to make sure I don’t spend too much time talking about my own dog. So, let me just say that my wonderful little 2-year-old Destry (Joshua von Alpensee) was named BISS for the first time in his show career. Destry has now earned 6 Best in Show titles in the last year. Thanks to Alida Comtois for trusting me with this very special boy. Heavy competition for that title was provided by Winner’s Dog Chief (Dragongården’s Super Trooper) co-owned by Terry McRea and Mary Ann Ruggerio-Smith. and Winner’s Bitch Diva (Godiva vom Sanften Loewen) co-owned by Margi Hinds and Mary Ann. Chief took Best of Winner’s and Best of Opposite went to Lori Taft’s P-Beary (Pelagia von Drieburgenland).

On Sunday, Elaine also proved an astute judge of talent as she handed Lori Taft’s boy Amos (Pride of Aslan’s Amos) his record 9th BISS. Sunday’s Winner’s Dog and Winner’s Bitch looked a whole bunch like Saturday as Chief and Diva were again awarded those titles. Repeating their BOW and BOS showings from Saturday were Chief and P-Beary.
Thanks to the efforts of Pat McDaniel, Obedience has become a much larger part of our Specialty. This year, we had Donald Rennick as our judge. We had 9 entries and 3 dogs earned legs toward their obedience titles. High in Trial this year and for the second straight year was Farryn, handled by Pat McDaniel recording a score of 182.

Canine Good Citizen tests were provided again for the 2nd year. Don Rennick, our Obedience judge is also certified to complete CGCs. This year, six more Northwest dogs added the CGC designation:
Biggles with Anders Ahlman
Sophie with Andie Holsten
Destry with Don James
Indie with Joan Brown
Koda with Kristina Ericsson
Ebba with Val Beard
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the great photographers we had help us with the show this year. Thanks to Todd and Chanteel Coon of Infinite Exposures Photography www.infiniteexposures.com
for providing great shots of the winners as well as wonderful action shots of all our dogs. All the pictures accompanying this article were taken by Todd.

We managed to sandwich another great party between 2 great shows on Saturday night.
It’s a really fun, together group we have here in the Northwest. Hopefully, all of you will have a chance to experience some of that spirit when you make your reservations to attend the 2006 National Specialty scheduled March 22 – 26, 2006 at the Coeur d’Alene Resort in beautiful Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. We’re all looking forward to hosting you at what should be a very unique and memorable LCA National Specialty.
